Color Printer

MacroDIS was used to analyze the output of a popular low cost color printer. Although 256 different colors are present in this palette (32 x 8 array), printing is accomplished through the use of only four dyes: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. This is commonly known as CMYK printing. The Spectrum Plot window shows the analysis of the palette color present at position (12, 8) as highlighted by a white cursor spot. This color appears brownish to the eye and uses all three of the CMY dyes (with absorption maxima at 450 nm, 575 nm, and 635 nm). The Contour Plot reveals the full richness of the color printing process, as the actual amount of each CMYK pigment changes. The Contour Plot was constructed by a similarity sort on a sort for maximum absorption, with display in an absolute rather than a full scale mode. This latter choice maintains radiometric calibration for color saturation levels.
