Contract Research and Development

For clients who would like to take advantage of our unique blend of expertise in optical design, software engineering and molecular genetics, KAIROS offers customized R&D solutions to meet your specific objectives.

Since the commercialization of our first imaging spectrophotometer in 1991, KAIROS clients have included companies involved in chemical manufacturing (diversified, agricultural and specialty) as well as biotech/diagnostics. We have also provided customized instrumentation to universities and government research laboratories.

Technology applications include quantitative microscopic analysis, microbiotechnology, protein engineering, microbiology and high-throughput screening.  Contact us for your specific needs.

Imaging Facilities KAIROS is continuing to develop both prototype and turn-key digital imaging spectrophotometers (DIS) capable of determining the fluorescence excitation, fluorescence emission, and absorption spectra for every pixel or group of pixels in a field of view. All systems are radiometrically calibrated. We design and build customized imaging spectrophotometers to fit the needs and specifications of individual researchers. Instruments available at our San Diego facility include: MicroDIS, MacroDIS, MicroFRET, FIMS, Kcat and a variety of prototype systems under development.

Enzyme Evolution • KAIROS has developed new technology in solid phase enzyme screening that combines advanced imaging devices with directed evolution. We offer this technology on a fee-for-service basis to improve the activity of your enzyme, or we can place an instrument on your site under a license agreement.

General • In addition to our enzyme engineering program, KAIROS scientists have invented novel protein design methods to engineer biopharmaceuticals and fluorescent proteins. In 1995, KAIROS was the first company to develop and license a spectrally modified GFP derivative.  Our cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular biology groups work within the same environment that fosters the co-development of instrumentation and software.
